Mikkeller newsletter N0. 10

posted by Thomas Schøn, 2010-01-03

This mail is a newsletter from Mikkeller - and you dont see that every day. Actually, its been so long ago since Mikkeller send out his last one, that everyone has forgotten when and what was in it.

But this has nothing to do with lack of any news stuff, rather than the news first and foremost ends up at Mikkeller´s website, mikkeller.dk , or at Mikkellers Fan Club, -Website Link-.

So now that we finally have written a newsletter and you have taken the time to read it, lets get on with it...

2009 has been a fabulous year for Mikkeller. The year had the best start of all, as members of The Danish Beer Enthusiasts elected Mikkeller to be Denmarks best brewery 2008. Hard to top that for a great start of a new year.

From this point on, everything has moved incredibly fast. Already on the 5th. of January, when everybody was recovering from New Year hangovers, Mikkel was up early to introduce us to his Beer Geek Brunch Weasel on national morning-television. This new beer created some talk to say the least, that the coffee in this beer had passed through a vietnamese weasel animal. The media was quick to name the Beer Geek Brunch "the shitty beer".

2009 was also the year where Mikkeller got his line of Single Hop on the move. After the first single hop, Simcoe, more followed, and last month came Tomahawk and Amarillo which was the 6th. and 7th. Early next year, 2010, an additional three new single hop beers will hit the market and at the same time new batches of the previous 7. This way you will be able to visit your local beer-pusher and buy 10 different Single Hops at the same time. With 10 different Single Hops in the fridge, all you need is a bag of peanuts to save the evening.

January 16th. at 14-17 hour, there will be a Single Hop arrangement at Ørsted Ølbar (beerpub) - more about this soon. Make a note in your calendar - its going to be a huge arrangement.

Besides the Single Hops and Beer Geek Brunch, especially the barrel aged beer has been on Mikkellers mind. And Mikkel has promised, that more barrel aged beer is on its way in 2010. Both new and well-known beers will appear in barrel aged versions during 2010. It has been Mikkellers declared goal and purpose with the Single Hops line, to let people taste the different sorts of hops isolated, here is a barrel aged project the way for people to taste one beer and then later taste the same beer, now barrel-aged on different barrels. This way you have an unique opportunity to taste what different barrels can do to the same beer.

Its obvious, that when Mikkeller in 2009 has achieved to launch nearly 40 different beers, it has been necessary to expand on several levels. In addition to move faster than before, Mikkel has been forced to work lesser as schoolteacher. Furthermore Thomas Schøn is now a full-time employee at Mikkellers. This way Mikkel hopes to have more time to realize the many projects Mikkeller constantly is struggling with.

Mikkeller has planed more travels abroad in 2010. One of these travels will go to Greece to brew a beer with the greek micro-brewery Craft. And a couple of journeys to the US can not be excluded. Whether this will result in yet a new beer brewed with Three Floyds, or Mikkeller will brew with a different brewery is to early to say. Another cooperation with a European brewery is in the plan for 2010 also.

Even though its very early in the process and even the fact, that there are a couple of month yet to taste it, we can reveal, what might be this year wildest new beer.
Mikkeller is in the process of brewing a beer with the theoretical IBU at 1000!. We are talking about an "Out of This World" beer at 12.2% Alc., and it is expected to be in the stores in February.

It has always been Mikkellers intention to seek and explore new limits, to what beer is and what it can become. 2010 will be no different.

The last news in this, now rather long newsletter, is the fact that Mikkeller has once again set a Danish record by brewing the strongest beer in Denmark ever.
In 2009, Mikkellers Black, kicked all other beers with 17.5% Alc. and was the strongest in Denmark so far. But now a new player is on the loose, and the name is Big Worst. The first batch is at 17.6% Alc., but Mikkel hope that new batches will go even higher, and is already in process. A gold and a silver medal should look rather nice on Mikkellers resumé.

As in the past year, the new year will reveal only very few newsletters from Mikkeller. Instead, we invite you to become a member of The Mikkeller Fan Club on Facebook, as this place will be used more frequently in the future.
